CMDA as a Restricted Major

Change of Major Sessions Happening Now

If you are currently not a CMDA major, but are thinking about: switching your major to CMDA or adding CMDA as a secondary major, follow the steps below to learn more about the internal transfer process and how to get started.

  1. Visit the CMDA Change of Major site
  2. Sign up for a virtual CMDA Change of Major Information Session
  3. Apply during Change of Major season (fall, spring, summer)

Information sessions are held: 10/21, 11/12, 12/4 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Requirements

To change their major to CMDA, students must:

  1. Be eligible to complete the following courses at the time of the transfer with a minimum grade of a C- in a maximum of two attempts
    • Math 1225
    • Math 1226
    • Math 2114
    • CMDA 2005 and CMDA 2006 OR STAT 3005, 3006, 3104, and MATH 2204 and 2214
  2. Be eligible to complete the following courses at the time of the transfer with a minimum grade of a C in a maximum of two attempts
    • CS 1064 and 2064 OR CS 1114
    • CS 2114
  3. Have an in-major GPA of 2.0 upon having attempted 12 credits of courses designated as counting toward the in-major GPA
  4. Have an overall GPA of 2.0

Appeals Process

Students may appeal change of major decisions. If you believe there is new or compelling information that was not previously considered and may impact the outcome, you are welcome to submit an appeal by emailing your request to  cmda-advising@vt.edu. In your appeal, clearly identify which of the four criteria you are addressing, and provide any new or additional information relevant to that specific criterion.
