The Quality, Statistics, and Reliability (QSR) section of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) is seeking participants for a team-based manufacturing artificial intelligence (AI) competition.

Co-sponsored by the Virginia Tech Academy of Data Science and partially supported by a pair of National Science Foundation grants, the competition is open to teams of up to four members from academia or industry; student participation is also encouraged.

Competitors in the challenge are being tasked with training an AI model to classify the manufacturability indicator when provided with feasible and infeasible design variables of Microbial Fuel Cell Anode Structure.

Submissions should include Python code with required formats, the trained serialized model object, and the result summary (up to 10 slides).

The submission deadline for the competition is Aug. 19, 2024; the three finalists will be notified by Sept. 2.

Finalists in the competition, which will be selected primarily on the highest F1 scores, will present their methodology and results during the INFORMS 2024 Annual Meeting, being held in Seattle, Oct. 20-23. The winning team will be chosen by a panel of judges comprised of the event’s organizers, including Virginia Tech’s Ran Jin (associate professor in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering) and Tom Woteki (director of the Academy of Data Science).
