Kurt Stein
Kurt Stein, an associate professor of practice in the Academy of Data Science, brings more than a decade of experience applying computational mathematics, modeling, simulation, and data-driven analysis to complex technical systems.
Before joining Virginia Tech in June 2026, Stein served as a member of the Principal Professional Staff at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where he held senior technical and leadership roles supporting large-scale, high-profile defense programs. His work spanned numerical modeling, systems analysis, algorithm development, technical integration, logistics, manufacturing, supply-chain analysis, and coordination across several multidisciplinary teams. He also served as a chief engineer and trusted technical advisor, helping guide the development and evaluation of complex systems from early analysis and design through testing and production.
In addition to his work at APL, Stein has taught graduate courses in applied mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, with an emphasis on numerical methods, differential equations, and analysis. His teaching emphasizes first principles, computational practice, and the ability to translate mathematical and technical results into concise explanations and clear decisions. At Virginia Tech, his interests include optimization, simulation, scientific computing, and experiential education.
Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Stein served as a captain in the U.S. Army and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He earned his B.S. in applied mathematics from the University of Central Arkansas and his M.S. and Ph.D. in computational and applied mathematics from Southern Methodist University.
