Alan Lattimer
Over the course of a 30-year diverse career in industry, Lattimer has worked in multiple industries to shape his skillset. He began his career learning how to run and then teaching people how to run nuclear power plants for the U.S. Navy at the Idaho National Lab. After several years, he was assigned to a submarine out of Norfolk, Virginia, for four years, which ignited his passion for international travel. At the conclusion of his time in the U.S. Navy, Lattimer returned to Virginia Tech to complete his B.S. in Computer Science.
After graduation, he went to work for a healthcare technology startup. During his time there, he ran the customer operations group working to optimize claims ingestion systems for health insurance carriers. Looking for a new challenge, Lattimer returned to Virginia Tech to complete his master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics. His research focus during this time was on reduced-order modeling of large-scale dynamical systems, especially fire. He returned to industry after graduation to work for a fire safety engineering consulting firm, leading their computational research and development groups.
Most recently, he was the Chief Analytics Officer for a healthcare technology startup looking at social determinants of health. While there, he focused on modeling the risk of communities across the U.S. for various social factors such as food insecurity, financial strain, transportation barriers, and housing instability. Those models are leading to the redeployment of resources by insurance carriers, life science companies, non-profit organizations, and providers to those individuals most in need of help.
While not at work, he enjoys traveling, wood working, playing music, and fly fishing.
